Lift Descriptions Bavarian Deadlift

Bavarian Deadlift

Official Rules

The rules of the Deadlift apply, with these exceptions. This is a SUMO style deadlift, where the hands must remain inside the legs to start the lift. The handle for the Bavarian Deadlift is a 1-inch (25 mm) bar with no knurling and no more than 30 inches (76.2 cm) in length. The bottom of the bar must be no more than 12 inches (30.5 cm) off the elevated platform. An elevated platform is used, and the height of the platform is at the meet director’s discretion. The weights will be loaded on a loading pin directly below the lifter. The bar may be connected to the weights by a rigid connection, carabiner or chain. Officials Commands: Down

VI.D. Deadlift Rules

The lifter must face the front of the platform with the bar horizontally in front of the lifter’s feet, gripped with an alternate or double overhand grip in both hands and lifted until the lifter is standing erect.

On completing the lift, the knees shall be locked in a straight position and the shoulders erect, with the shoulders, hips, and ankles in a straight vertical body position. At the completion of the lift, the Head Referee will say, “Down!” The command will not be given until the bar is held motionless and the lifter is in the upright/vertical finished position.

Once the attempt has begun, no downward movement of the bar is allowed until the lifter reaches the erect/vertical position with the knees locked.

1. Causes for Disqualification of a Deadlift

  • Any downward movement of the bar before it reaches the final position.
  • Failure to stand erect/vertical with the shoulders back.
  • Failure to lock the knees straight at the completion of the lift.
  • Stepping backward or forward or moving the feet laterally.
  • Foot movement after the command “Down” will not be cause for failure.
  • Lowering the bar before receiving the Head Referee’s command.
  • Releasing the bar and not returning the bar to the platform under control.
  • Failure to comply with any of the items outlined under the Rules of Performance.
