Becoming a certified OTSO Official is your chance to lead the community, uphold the standards of the legends, and make the impossible possible for lifters in your area.

The Heart of OTSO: It’s About the FUN!

While we take our standards seriously, the real “lift” at OTSO is having fun! Our founders created this organization to celebrate every member as a champion and to find joy in every single PR, no matter the weight. We are the loudest, proudest strength community on the planet because we prioritize a positive, exciting environment for everyone involved.

Why Step Up to the Platform?

  • No Officials = No Events: Every sanctioned meet requires at least one certified OTSO Official to verify results. By getting certified, you become the catalyst that allows new events to happen in your region.
  • Host with Ease: Being a certified official makes hosting your own sanctioned OTSO meet significantly easier. You’ll have the knowledge and credentials to run a professional competition from day one.
  • The “Remote” Advantage: Want to compete but don’t have a local official nearby? We offer a temporary “Single Location Referee Exemption.” If you are the only certified referee in your area, you can participate in a sanctioned meet and submit your results via video for review by the Leadership Team.
  • Master the Rulebook: From the nuances of the Bavarian Deadlift to specific gear requirements, you’ll become a true expert in the sport.

The Path to Certification

We’ve made the process straightforward and accessible because we want passionate leaders like you in the mix.

1. The Rules Test

Your journey begins with the OTSO Rules Examination.

  • No Cost: There is absolutely no fee to take the exam.
  • Open Book: You are encouraged to review the OTSO Rule Book as you answer the questions.
  • Go at Your Own Pace: There is no time limit; start the test and take as long as you need.
  • Learn as You Go: A score of 80% is required to pass. If you don’t hit it on your first try, you will be shown which areas need work so you can retake the test and increase your knowledge for the next attempt.

2. Level 2 Official (Active Certification)

Once you pass the written exam, you are an Official in Training. To reach Level 2, you must complete two practical judging sessions (on-site or via video simulation).

  • Validity: Level 2 status is valid for four years, at which point a simple re-exam keeps you active.

3. Level 1 Official (The Highest Ranking)

For those who truly live on the platform, the Level 1 status is the ultimate goal.

  • The Requirement: Once you have officiated a minimum of 150 attempts across sanctioned OTSO events as a Level 2 Official, you can apply for Level 1.
  • Lifetime Status: Level 1 is a Lifetime Certification. You are exempt from all future mandatory re-exams—you have mastered the craft for life.

List of Officials

See who is already leading the charge in your region. Our public roster lists officials by name, province/state, and their current level:

  • Official in Training: Passed the written exam; completing practical sessions.
  • Level 2 Official: Active certified official (4-year term).
  • Level 1 Official: Lifetime certified (highest rank; 150+ attempts officiated).

Level 2 Official: This is the entry-level certification for officiating sanctioned meets. Status is valid for four years. To advance to Level 1 (Lifetime Certification), officials must maintain a detailed log documenting a minimum of 150 officiated attempts across OTSO-sanctioned events.
